The
route to Big Sur was surprisingly easy. From Fremont, I took Dumbarton Bridge
(CA-84), then the hilly but inevitable Page Mills Rd. in Palo Alto to Skyline
(HWY 35), to HWY 9 all the way to Santa Cruz. From there, I followed the Pacific
Coast Bike Route road signs that took me through strawberry plantations and
empty country roads of the Monterey Bay. From Watsonville, it was a 25 mile
ride to Monterey where I had to go through the city's hills to bypass the 17
mile scenic route. From there, I took HWY 1 all the way through Pfeifer State
Park.
